Murphy’s Law

Less then 24 hours before my thesis paper is due, the power cord to my Mac decides to melt. Last semester my logic board died two days before my semester review.

Thank you apple for being there for me when I need you!

Triolin Concept Sketchs

Last week I added a series of early concept images to my coroflot portfolio.

After deciding on my problem statement -roughly ~ to create an environment where multiple multiple musicians can interact with one object; and falling in love with all of the semiotic connotations the violin had to offer, due to its rich history; and finally realizing my own limitations, having never before built an instrument; I felt that this reconfiguration of the violin with be most rewarding for me to make. It is structurally one of the more stable designs. Metaphorically it worked because the three instruments are sharing a resonating chamber, in much the same way as the musicians are sharing one instrument. It wasn’t too different in structure from a regular violin, which would allow me to learn many of the traditional skills involved with making the object. It also changed the subtle body positions of the players to be more open towards each other, and forces the musicians into an almost uncomfortable amount of eye contact.

Triolin Opening

The openings on Friday and Saturday were great! I got so many good responses, am therefor inspired to push forward with my work. Even though I am not really sure what my work is anymore. Mostly it was a great relief to know that school is finally coming to an end. I think all of the seniors I talked to sympathized with that relief. My mother, however, had the opposite reaction; feeling down that I will no longer be in school. Here are a few pictures from the show…

Ann Arbor was beautiful. Rainy, but beautiful.
